Bio-Based Propylene Glycol for Personal Care, Home Care, and Resin Systems

The renewable-sourced chemical Bio-Based Propylene Glycol is gaining strong traction as a sustainable alternative to its petroleum-derived counterpart. Produced primarily via hydrogenolysis of bio-glycerol (a byproduct of biodiesel) or through metabolic engineering of sugars, this form of propylene glycol offers almost identical performance — but with a significantly lower carbon footprint.

In industrial and consumer markets, bio-based propylene glycol is being adopted in sectors such as personal care (creams, lotions, shampoos), pharmaceuticals (solvent for APIs), food and beverage (as a humectant or stabiliser), as well as automotive antifreeze and de-icing fluids. Because it is a drop-in molecule, it can directly replace conventional PG without requiring major changes in processing or product formulation. Moreover, by utilising glycerol from biodiesel or other renewable feedstocks, the manufacturing route supports circular-economy principles, reduces reliance on fossil resources and contributes to lower greenhouse-gas emissions. Advances in green chemistry, such as more efficient catalysts and fermentation technologies, are enhancing the economic competitiveness of bio-PG. As a key component of renewable propylene glycol chemistry, bio-PG retains essential properties such as hygroscopicity, solvent capacity, and compatibility with other formulation ingredients, making it suitable for a broad spectrum of applications.

As sustainability becomes a priority for brands, regulators and consumers alike, demand for bio-based propylene glycol is rising. Its low toxicity, biodegradability and “bio-based carbon” credentials help companies align with eco-friendly and low-carbon objectives. However, challenges remain: securing consistent bio-feedstock supply, reducing conversion costs, and scaling production are key hurdles. Innovations in production pathways — especially leveraging crude glycerol from biodiesel and using advanced microbial or catalytic processes — will play a critical role in unlocking further market growth and making bio-PG a mainstream, high-performance chemical building block.
